Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma in the first look picture from their upcoming film Sui Dhaaga

The first look of Yash Raj Films new production Sui Dhaaga, starring Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma, indicates that the story is set in a lower middle-class setting.

The first look of the two lead characters from the upcoming film Sui Dhaaga was unveiled late on Monday. The Yash Raj Films’ production features Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma. What is striking is how commonplace the two look, giving us a peek into the story.

Anushka, who plays Mamta in the film, is a picture of domesticity — she sports a purple and white sari (looks like synthetic no-fuss fabric), a mustard sweater, a bindi (vermilion dot worn by many women in India, married or otherwise) and sindoor (vermilion worn by married Hindu women). Not to be missed is her nose pin and ‘angoothe waley juraab’ (a customised sock that can be worn with a slipper).

The picture is arresting as it is so far removed from the stars’ glamourous real life. Varun, who plays Mauji in the film, also carries the ‘aam aadmi’ look with comfort. Wearing maroon pants and a polka-dotted shirt (and a moustache to go with it), he does pass off as the “average Joe” so often seen in India. From the look, it is easy to surmise that the story is set in a lower middle class setting.

Speaking about the choice of his heroine, Maneesh had said, “We wanted someone who could effortlessly transform herself into a character who is intelligent, strong and expressive even in her silence. Anushka brings in the authenticity and resilient spirit as a performer and a star. Today, moviegoers want to discover and love characters that they connect with. They want to identify themselves with the story and see how convincingly and truthfully actors translate it.”

Both the actors have been training hard for their roles. The production house, in the past, revealed pictures of both Varun and Anushka honing the skills required for the roles — tailoring and stitching. While Varun can be seen learning to stick with a sewing machine, Anushka was seen with needles and thread.
